What's New on the 2020 Jeep Wrangler?

The 2020 Jeep Wrangler has brought a number of powertrain updates. The largest changes are the shuffling of the engine lineup.

Still standard across all trims is the 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 with the engine start-stop feature.

The 2020 Wrangler Sport, Sport S, and Rubicon models lose the two-liter turbo four-cylinder with FCA's a torque mild-hybrid technology, but it's been replaced by a version of the two-liter turbo without eTorque but with engine start/stop. This change lowers the price of the optional two-liter turbo on those models by $1,500 making the cost of entry effectively $1,250 less than a comparably equipped 2019 model with the turbo.

The Sahara trim still has the optional two-liter turbo four-cylinder with e-torque and gets a price cut of $1,000 compared to the 2019 version.

One major addition is the arrival of a 3.0-liter V-6 EcoDiesel that's expected to deliver 260 horsepower and 442 pounds per foot of off-road adventuring torque. It will only be available on the Wrangler Unlimited models with an eight-speed automatic transmission.

The four-door Wrangler Unlimited lineup is the Wrangler Sport, Sport S, and Rubicon trims plus the Sahara trim. The Sahara trim can now be equipped with mild-hybrid eTorque.

New Optional Packages

There are also three new optional packages available. The first optional package is the Wrangler Willys Edition that adds fat 32-inch mud-terrain tires, aggressive rock rails, a limited-slip rear differential, and more off-road capability.

The second optional package is the Wrangler Freedom Edition that honors U.S. military members with special patriotic touches.

The third option is the Wrangler Black and Tan package that includes black exterior badging and a tan soft top.

There are also some minor trim and option updates for 2020. The Sport trim now offers LED lighting. The Advanced Safety Group option package now includes the 8.4-inch infotainment screen with navigation and automatic high beams.

Interior Design and Technology

The interior space for the 2020 Wrangler is adequate, especially if you decide to splurge on the four-door. The two-door option provides for about 35.7 inches of rear legroom, while the four-door option provides roughly 38.3 inches of rear legroom. Unfortunately, one of the biggest drawbacks of the two-door option is that it's slightly harder to exit the vehicle. Another drawback of getting the two-door version is the relatively small 12.9 cubic feet of cargo space with the seats in the upright position and only 46.9 cubic feet of cargo space with the seats folded down. The bigger four-door option offers a respectable 31.7 cubic feet of cargo space with the seats up and 72.4 cubic feet of space when the rear seats are folded down.

Jeep provides plenty of options when it comes to technology. The base Wrangler has a five-inch touchscreen for basic audio and car controls. You can choose to upgrade to a 7-inch or 8.4-inch version that uses FCA's user-friendly Uconnect system.

A Sahara trim Jeep Wrangler can feel luxurious inside if all the options are selected, while a base Sport is a minimalist joy.

Like its predecessors, the 2020 Jeep Wrangler is a bit of a classic vehicle, and so, it's not surprising that there aren't many safety features standard on it. However, you have the option of adding the safety features you prefer. Some of the available safety systems include automatic emergency braking, cruise control, rear parking sensors, automatic high beams, and blind-spot monitoring.

Transforming Options

Jeep allows a person to basically transform the 2020 Wrangler into a totally different vehicle. The 2020 Wrangler is designed so that every door can be taken off. Like in previous years, Jeep made the 2020 Wrangler's roof to be taken off so that it becomes a convertible. They also permitted the windshield to be folded down onto the hood to allow a person to truly experience a unique ride.

Jeep offers a few different roof designs and all Wranglers are convertible. The Freedom Top is a hardtop with panels that you can remove. When they're fitted, cruising the highway is relatively quiet.

There are also other soft tops available, which amazingly make for a considerably faster transformation into a convertible. The operation to transform the jeeps into convertibles is better for the newest generation of Wranglers; however, there is still a large learning curve with any of the chosen tops.

One of the best new design features also a person to remove the rear side panels without removing the other panels. This selection will provide a convertible's airflow without worrying about getting sunburnt.

Jeep also offers a hybrid option called the Sky One-Touch roof. It's similar to a hardtop except for the flat portion above the head that folds at a button's press. This permits a person to get the feeling of a soft-top with roof removed, but it forgoes the complicated procedure of removing the soft top.

Fuel Economy

The two-door Jeep Wrangler equipped with a manual gets around 17 mpg in the city and 25 mpg on the highway. The automatic two-door gets 18 mpg in the city and 23 on the highway.

The four-door models take a dip in efficiency, with the automatic four-door getting around 19 miles to the gallon in the city and 20 on the highway.

The optional turbocharged four-cylinder 2.0-liter with eTorque is paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission and produces 270 horsepower and 295 pounds per foot of torque. Fuel mileage gains on the two-door model are estimated at 22/24/23 mpg with the four-door having an estimated 21/22/21 mpg in both the start/stop and eTorque versions.
