2020 Jeep Cherokee

The Jeep Cherokee is a nameplate with a special place in Jeep history that dates back to 1974 where it kickstarted the sport-utility-vehicle boom. Before the Cherokee blew everyone away, SUVs were rugged Jeeps or thumping wagons like the Ford Bronco that had limited appeal to city dwellers.

The Cherokee changed all that, and other manufacturers were quick to notice how many Jeep Cherokees were turning up in suburban driveways and supermarket lots.

In 2014, the Jeep Cherokee saw a major revival, and in 2019 the Cherokee once again got an extensive refurbishing. The Jeep Cherokee in 2019/2020 retains much of the model introduced in 2014 in terms of basic architecture, but the interior and exterior are much changed. The exterior is modern and the interior is much more upscale, touching luxury in some cases. Cargo capacity has improved, the car is lighter, and the engine is more efficient.

The 2020 Jeep Cherokee is front-wheel-drive with the option of 4-wheel drive. Size-wise, it competes with the Ford Escape and Honda CR-V, but as with any Jeep, excellent off-road prowess comes as part of the deal. Try following the Jeep Cherokee off-road with a CR-V and you're liable to get stuck pretty quickly.

The 2020 Jeep Cherokee vs. Jeep Grand Cherokee

First, we should mention that 2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee, which is a different model to the Jeep Cherokee completely. While they share some similarities, the Jeep Grand Cherokee is a full-size SUV whereas the Jeep Cherokee discussed here is a small crossover SUV. The Jeep Grand Cherokee does have more power; the base trim has a 3.6-liter V6 capable of 295 horsepower and 260 pounds per foot of torque. On the other hand, the Jeep Cherokee gets better gas mileage and is around $6,000 cheaper than the Grand Cherokee in a per-trim comparison, so the Cherokee makes a compelling case if budget is your primary concern.

There's no 'better' model; the Grand Cherokee has more space, power, and capability, but the Cherokee has a better price point, better maneuverability, and costs less to run.

Drivetrain Options

Three engines are on offer in the 2020 Jeep Cherokee - a 4-cylinder, a V6,  and a turbo 4-cylinder.

  • The 4-cylinder is a 180-horsepower 2.4-liter capable of 171 pounds per foot of torque.
  •
  • The V6 is a 271-horsepower 3.2-liter capable of 239 pounds per foot of torque.
  •
  • The turbo-four is a 270-horsepower 2.0-liter that outputs 295 pounds per foot of torque.

All of the engines are paired with a nine-speed automatic. All of the trim levels have options for an all-wheel-drive while the Trailhawk comes with it as standard.

The 2020 Jeep Cherokee Trim Level Options

You can choose from one of five major trim levels in the 2020 Jeep Cherokee - the Latitude, Latitude Plus, Limited, Trailhawk, and Overland.

2020 Jeep Cherokee Latitude Features

The Latitude is the base Jeep Cherokee. Expect an MSRP of around $25,740-$27,240. Some of the highlights are a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support, a USB port, Bluetooth, a rearview camera, a six-speaker audio system, automatic xenon headlights, 17-inch wheels, heated side mirrors, height-adjustable seats in the front, and an under-seat-cushion storage compartment.

2020 Jeep Cherokee Latitude Plus Features

The Latitude Plus starts at around $27,395 - $28,895.  Two extra USB ports are added, you get Satellite radio, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, a power-adjustable driver's seat, and keyless ignition.

It's also the first trim where you can choose to add the Comfort and Convenience package that adds remote start, a universal garage door opener, an auto-dimming rear-view mirror, dual-zone climate control, and aux power outlet.

Though the Latitude Plus comes with the same base 2.4-liter engine as the Latitude, you have the option with the Latitude Plus to upgrade to the V6 or the turbo-four engines.

2020 Jeep Cherokee Limited Features

The Limited trim has an MSRP of $31,350 - $34,595. This trim already includes all of the features of the Latitude Plus with the Comfort and Convenience package and adds a number of its own additions. The Limited has 18-inch wheels, an 8.4-inch touchscreen infotainment system, heated front seats and steering wheel, a better driver information display, leather upholstery, and power front seats.

The Limited trim also includes driver assistance safety features missing from the Latitude and Latitude Plus. Now you have blind-spot monitoring, rear parking sensors, and a rear cross-traffic alert.

2020 Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk Features

The Trailhawk has a similar MSRP at around $34,505. It's designed for off-road use and comes with the V6 engine as standard and the turbo-four as optional. The most important difference in the Trailhawk is the advanced Active Drive II all-wheel-drive system. The Trailhawk also has a locking rear differential, hill ascent and descent control, all-terrain tires, 17-inch wheels, better ground clearance, skid plates, leather upholstery, and off-road suspension tuning.

2020 Jeep Cherokee Overland Features

The top-level trim of the 2020 Jeep Cherokee, the Overland, has an MSRP of $36,995 - $38,495. Instead of the 2.4-liter engine, the Overland is fitted with the V6 as standard, and you have the option to upgrade to the 2.0-liter turbo.

The Overland has a 9-speaker audio system, sliding rear seat, ventilated front seats, driver-seat memory function, sound-deadening glass, a body-color exterior trim, and 18-inch wheels.

2020 Jeep Cherokee Options

Most of the features of higher trims can be incorporated in lower trims via packages, so it's possible to create your perfect Jeep Cherokee without breaking the bank. One of the most popular options for a 2020 Jeep Cherokee for sale in Kansas City is the Trailer Tow package. This adds a Class III hitch, standalone transmission cooler, and trailer wiring harness. Another top option is the Technology package that includes advanced driver-assistance safety tech like lane departure warning, adaptive cruise control, auto high beams, parallel parking assist, and a forward collision warning system with automatic emergency braking.
