The 2018 Chrysler Pacifica vs. 2018 Toyota Sienna

Introduction

If you have a family and are in the market for a new vehicle, a minivan is the obvious choice. They are the safest, most affordable means of ferrying your family and friends anywhere they need to go. The fuel efficiency and safety ratings of minivans are generally better than those of SUVs, and they are dependable workhorses that will hold up to years of heavy use. The question then is what is the best new minivan on the market? This year's two main contenders are the new 2018 Chrysler Pacifica and the 2018 Toyota Sienna.

Both models have their benefits, but after exhaustive comparisons by a vast range of critics, the consensus is in: the new Chrysler Pacifica is the minivan to buy. It handles great, has a stylish profile, and boasts an impressive array of options and safety features. The 2018 Sienna, on the other hand, may be a sensible choice for some, but critics have described its handling as lackluster, and to be frank, it isn't very engaging to drive.

After conducting our own comparative analysis, Landmark Chrysler wholeheartedly agrees that the new 2018 Chrysler Pacifica stands head and shoulders over the competition. Don't just take our word for it, though. The new 2018 Chrysler Pacifica really needs to be seen in person. Your Kansas City Chrysler dealer has it in stock right now!

Trim Levels

The 2018 Chrysler Pacifica has six different trim levels. The Toyota Sienna has seven models, but its base model's MSRP is nearly $4,000 more than that of the base model Pacifica.

Chrysler Pacifica L

The base model for the 2018 Chrysler Pacifica has an MSRP of $26,985 and comes fully equipped with a UConnnect 4 infotainment system with 7-inch touchscreen, SafetyTec features, and a third-row Stow 'n Go Seating and Storage System. It can also be upgraded to include tri-zone manual climate control and KeySense parental controls.

Chrysler Pacifica LX

Boasts all of the same great features as the L but also includes second-row Stow 'n Go bucket seats and an eight-way power driver's seat with four-way power lumbar adjustment.

Chrysler Pacifica Touring Plus

Employs even more high-tech features, such as a remote start system, automatic tri-zone climate control, satellite radio, power-sliding rear doors, and a power liftgate.

Chrysler Pacifica Touring L

Features heated front seats, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, perforated leather upholstery throughout, convenient grocery bag hooks, and chrome Stow N Place Roof Rack. There are a number of upgrade packages also available in the Touring L related to sound and entertainment systems and safety.

Chrysler Pacifica Touring L Plus

Takes the technology to the next level with a power-adjustable passenger seat, heated steering wheel, heated second-row seats, and a 115-volt power outlet. It features a 13-speaker audio system from Alpine, and the upgraded Uconnect system includes a larger 8.4-inch touchscreen, a pair of seatback touchscreens, and wireless streaming, and it's loaded with extra features. Like the standard Touring L, the Plus model has multiple package upgrades available.

Chrysler Pacifica Limited

This top-of-the-line trim offers the proprietary Stow 'n Vac vacuum cleaning system, ventilated front seats, a tri-pane panoramic sunroof, hands-free power sliding side doors, and hands-free power liftgate.

Performance

The 2018 Pacifica is front-wheel drive with a 9-speed automatic transmission and a 3.6-liter V6 engine that is powerful yet fuel efficient. The Sienna, by comparison, has an 8-speed automatic transmission and a 3.5-liter V6. On top of that, Consumer Reports dinged the Sienna for its less-than-smooth gear shifting. Again, the clear winner is the Pacifica.

Exterior

The Pacifica has a far sleeker shape than most minivans, effectively combining form with function. Every aspect of its exterior has clearly been designed to complement the whole, from its elegant nose to its large, chrome-framed windows set in the hands-free power sliding doors to its rear fenders. This year's Pacifica is the best-looking model yet and proves that you can drive a minivan without sacrificing style.

As for the competition, the 2018 Sienna unfortunately takes several steps backwards. It has a boxy look in general and the snub-nosed hood doesn't do it any favors. Unlike the cutting-edge Pacifica, this year's Sienna looks like a minivan from a previous generation.

Interior

The 2018 Pacifica features a spacious interior that can conveniently accommodate a lot of passengers or cargo or a combination of the two. Those in the front can gaze out of the panoramic windshield, and passengers in the back can enjoy the seatback-mounted touchscreens. The upholstery looks and feels great in virtually all of the trim levels, and most models have power-adjustable seats. There are roomy compartments built into the console, and the Stow 'N Go system easily converts the comfortable rear seats into a flat floor when you need the extra room for storage. All told, its interior clocks in at nearly 200 cubic feet of shared passenger and cargo space.

The interior of the Sienna, by comparison, lacks the proprietary Stow 'N Go technology that makes the Pacifica such a game-changer for minivan owners.

Safety Features

Safety is a top priority for the Pacifica, with a SafetyTec system coming standard in even the base trim. This includes Rear Cross Path Detection, Blind Spot Monitoring, and ParkSense Rear Park Assist with Full Stop. Certain trims can be upgraded to include surround-view cameras, adaptive cruise control, and collision-warning technology with automatic emergency braking. With all this in mind, it's no wonder the Pacifica was one of the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety's Top Safety Picks. On top of that, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration gave the Pacifica five out of five stars.

In terms of the competition, the 2018 Sienna does offer some of the same safety features as the Pacifica, such as forward collision warning and automatic emergency braking. The lane departure warning system and adaptive cruise control are also beneficial, but ultimately the Sienna can't compete with the Pacifica. As with performance, interior, and exterior, when it comes to safety features, the choice is obvious.
