The 2019 Ram 1500 vs Chevrolet Silverado 1500 - Which is best for you?

2019 ram 1500

The Ram 1500 and Chevrolet Silverado 1500 both received high accolades during the 2019 MotorTrend's yearly Truck of the Year event. Only one could be the winner. The Ram 1500 took the top spot, having impressed all throughout the year. Both are heavy hitters, but the Ram 1500 is full of surprising innovations, and praiseworthy advances in technology.

So Which Truck Is The Right One For You?

Interior Features

The Ram 1500 is one of the most popular trucks around Kansas City and Gladstone, in a field of vehicles that are all high sellers and favorites of consumers who want a pickup truck that is much more than simply a "work truck". Ram has answered that call and done an incredible job with the Ram 1500.

Ram 1500 reviews indicate there is nothing at all lacking in design innovations, especially on the interior of the vehicle. Many improvements from earlier models include more legroom with an extended cab, easy to access and read the touchscreen console.

The sophistication provided by the Ram 1500's interior might appeal to the entrepreneur or business professional who can appreciate both functionality and aesthetics. First, the Ram ingeniously puts the driver in a truck that doubles as a sleek, modern looking mobile office. Features include a customizable center console that offers a phone charger, an 8.4-inch or 12-inch touchscreen for various media, phone storage pocket, well-placed sliding bins, and a clever, unique console lid that can create a desk-on-demand.

The Ram 1500 offers space enough for the necessary tools of today's professional tradesperson or business professional on the go, including ample room for phone and laptop storage, well-designed drink holders, media storage, and a ton of leg room.

The seats are temperature controlled whether you need 'em warm or cool, with the added comfort of leather for a luxury feel. The interior cab's wood and customizable leather color and attention to the details provide an elevated level of eye-appeal.

Some of these features are also available as add-ons on the Silverado, depending on the model you choose, making the two almost comparable. However, the Ram 1500 includes most things from the get-go and makes for a more upscale choice at the same price point.

Exterior Design

This year the Ram 1500 got top marks for its aesthetically designed ultra-clean lines. The exterior of the cab has been enhanced with seven choices of grilles, three attractive versions of headlights and taillights, and a generous roster of fully fifteen different wheel designs. That's a remarkable array of choices, which may have contributed to the Ram 1500's eye-candy appeal. It looks as though the RAM engineers may have honed in on an increasingly diverse demographic of potential buyers who are looking for their specific signature style.

Other changes in design include a choice of crew cab or extended cab, and beds measuring both 5x7 and 6x4. It seems there's something for everyone with the Ram 1500.

The Chevy Silverado 1500 has also made overall changes in design, including a longer cab for more leg room, bigger beds, more tie downs, and many other functional features.

Price Points

The Silverado's prices range from about $28k for the basic truck to over $55k with all the features and add-ons. The Ram 1500 is comparable, starting at $31k up to $57k fully loaded. These are affordable trucks.

Performance

The Ram 1500 was designed and built with a combination of heavy-duty steel along with lighter, high-strength metals, decreasing the truck's overall weight load by about 200 pounds, resulting in significant increased aerodynamic efficiency.

Reviews describe a smooth and comfortable ride from both the coil-spring rear suspension and the four-cornered air-suspension system with road leveling, available in five different heights. This is a great example of how the Ram 1500 puts "custom" back into the word "customer" for both lighter use and needs that are more heavy-duty.

Despite the luxury feel to the ride, the Ram 1500 boasts a stunning 12,700-pound  towing capacity, compared with the 11,100-pound towing capacity of the Silverado 1500.

The Silverado gets OK reviews for its smooth ride, but with a deficiency in damping that only becomes noticeable when climbing steeper grades, according to online reviews.

Two of the Ram 1500 engines are equipped with electric supplemental motors, providing greater fuel efficiency than ever before. Ram is keeping abreast with current trends toward responsible climate awareness demanded by today's sophisticated buyers.

The e-torque system adds sustained power for cruising while carrying a heavy load and when climbing steep grades, allowing for smoother transitions and shifting. Standard engine power is virtually unrivaled in comparison tests, so any way you slice it, the Ram rates highest in its class for V8 efficiency, and with 395 horsepower, that's lots of power.

The Ram 1500 fuel efficiency surpassed the EPA's standards, with results ranging from 18 to 20 mpg. However, the Silverado came in with slightly better fuel efficiency numbers, averaging 20 to 22 mpg.

Both the Silverado and Ram 1500 tested at great fuel efficiency. Both the Ram and Silverado make sound financial "dollars and sense," another solid reason to seriously consider these models.

Safety

The Silverado performed consistently and was rated Good to Superior on all safety testing by the IIHS for the 2019 model, except for one marginal deficiency in "small overlap front passenger" category.

In six crash tests performed by the IIHS, the Ram 1500 achieved the highest possible safety ratings except for a marginal deficiency in headlights.

The Ram chassis is constructed from unbeatable high-strength steel. An eight-sided front rail extension construction design affords even extra safety for occupants, especially important for protection in a front-end crash scenario.

Both rear and front crash alert sensors are available in the 2019 Ram 1500 for sale on the miracle mile, along with automatic sensors that help keep the truck on track and inside the lanes, and sensors that monitor blind spots. A 360-degree camera is also on board for 360-degree safety. Some of these features are also available on the Silverado and likely, these types of features are probably soon to become almost standard. That's how good technology is getting these days. And that's a great thing for the consumer.

Overall

Overall, both of these vehicles have got the guts, the brains, and the impressive style for just about any level of job performance. But between these two trucks, the consumer should test drive the 2019 Ram 1500. It has been voted MotorTrend Truck of the Year for a reason - it's the best light-duty truck you can buy today.
