2020 RAM 1500 in Kansas City

Two full-size pickup trucks are at the top of the lists of new trucks for sale in 2020, the 2020 Dodge Ram and the 2020 Ford F-150. But which is the best new truck to buy on the Miracle Mile in Independence this year?

We put these two heavyweights up against each other head-to-head.

Exterior

Both full-size pickup trucks have a commanding presence on the road. The Ford F-150 has remained mostly unchanged and still looks unquestionably like a Ford truck with its super boxy cab design and wide grille. The Ford F-150 comes in the following trim options for 2020 - XL, XLT, Lariat, King Ranch, Platinum, and Limited.

The Dodge Ram 1500 for sale in Kansas and Gladstone comes in six trim options as well for 2020 - The Tradesman, Big Horn, Laramie, Laramie Longhorn, Rebel, and Limited.

This year the 2020 Ram 1500 boasts a new design, most particularly in the use of different headlight designs for the different models. The Laramie Longhorn and Limited models from Dodge boast narrower designs. Also, the Ram has dropped the single cab option while the Ford F-150 still has the single, extended, and crew cab configurations.

The Ford F-150 offers better legroom and headroom but the Dodge Ram 1500 offers a wider stance on the road.

Power/Tow Capacity and Handling

The base model engine for the 2020 Ford F-150 is a 3.3L V6 engine with 290 horsepower and 265 pounds per foot of torque. Ford also has five other power engine options as well.

Rams are known for their power. The 2020 models do not disappoint in that department. The 2020 Dodge Ram 1500 base is a 3.6L V6 engine with 305 horsepower and 269 pounds per foot of torque and a 6,730-pounds towing capacity.

If you're looking for a meaner engine, the Ram 1500 V8 5.7L Hemi engine is the most powerful of all the models for both Ford and Dodge. The Ram Hemi pushes 395 horsepower and 410 pounds per foot of torque and has a towing capacity of 12,750 pounds 2020 is the first year Dodge also has the option of an eTorque Mild Hybrid System available.

Both the 2020 Dodge Ram 1500 and the 2020 Ford F-150 come with diesel engine options this year as well. With the Dodge Ram Diesel engine boasting a 3.0L EcoDiesel V6 producing 250 horsepower and 440 pounds per foot of torque, the Ram is unmatched.

Both the Ford F-150 and the Dodge Ram 1500 are only available with automatic transmissions.

The Ford F-150 has a wider turning radius than the Dodge Ram 1500 making the Dodge Ram slightly better in terms of maneuvering and handling than the Ford F-150.

Interior

Both trucks are available as stripped-down work vehicles all the way up to fully loaded, like any other luxury car in any class boasting leather power seats, premium audio, and oversized touchscreen radio displays, heated steering wheels.

Comparatively, for the mid-level models, you'll find the Ram offers a better interior design. The Dodge Ram 1500 has a 12-inch screen and uses the Fiat-Chrysler's Uconnect system that they have been fine-tuning over the years while Ford's F-150 boasts a slightly smaller screen using the Ford Sync System.

While the Ford F-150 trim is perfectly fine, Dodge takes attention to detail to another level with the interior finishes of all models using leather, chrome, or aluminum plating as opposed to plastic on the door panels and dash, giving a more luxurious, well-built feel.

Both the Ford F-150 and the Ram 1500 offer Android Auto and Apple CarPlay with a 4G LTE connection to turn your truck into a Wi-Fi hotspot.

Safety

Both the Dodge Ram 1500 and the Ford F-150 offer a host of new safety features in their 2020 models. Both trucks stood above average or better in every test from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

In crash ratings, the Ford F-150 received nearly the highest rating from every test aside from poor marks for the headlights and medium marks for LATCH ease of use.

The 2020 Dodge Ram 1500 outshone the Ford F-150 in safety ratings being named the Top Safety Pick for all crew cab models. The 2020 Dodge Ram 1500 had the highest ratings in each area with the only exception being medium marks for headlights and LATCH ease of use.

Both the Ford F-150 and the Dodge Ram 1500 offer a menu of safety features with some only available from the Ford F-150 and some only available from the Dodge Ram 1500. Both trucks currently offer 4-wheel Disc Anti-lock Brakes, Auto-on headlights, Lane Departure Warnings, Blind Spot Monitoring, and Electronic Stability Control (ESC). The Ford F-150 offers Adaptive Cruise Control additionally where the Dodge Ram does not. However, the Dodge Ram 1500 also includes Rear Back-up Cameras and Park Assist Systems that Ford has left off its 2020 models.

Fuel Economy

One thing the 2020 Ford F-150 has going for it is its fuel-efficiency, but only slightly. Fuel economy for the 2020 Ford F-150 3.3L V6 is 19 miles per gallon city and 25 miles per gallon highway. The Ford F-150 V8 models take a slight dip in gas mileage with 16 miles per gallon city and 22 miles per gallon highway.

The 2020 Dodge Ram 1500 3.6L V6 gets 20 miles per gallon city and 25 miles per gallon highway. The Hemi version of the Dodge Ram dips down to 15 miles per gallon city and 22 miles per gallon highway.

Cost and Warranty

Both the 2020 Dodge Ram 1500 and the 2020 Ford F-150 offer almost the same warranty for their trucks. Both basic warranties are your standard three-year/36,000 miles. Both Dodge and Ford offer additional warranties at your local car dealer in Independence.

The starting MSRP for the 2020 Ford F-150 is $28,495.00 while the starting MSRP for the 2020 Dodge Ram 1500 is $32,145.00. Even though the Dodge Ram has a higher asking price for the base model than the Ford F-150, the MSRP for the Limited model of the Ford F-150 tops out at around $80,000. That's roughly $10,000 more than the top range MSRP for the 2020 Dodge Ram 1500 Limited fully loaded, which sits at $70,000 respectively.

An argument can certainly be made that if you're looking for a heavy-duty truck with all of the options, the 2020 Dodge Ram 1500 Limited is the best bang for your buck without sacrificing any quality across the board.
